What this blog is all about...

Camping, hiking and biking Texas state parks is a great way to get out and have some fun. But most of the sites have very few pictures or sparse descriptions. This blog is here to provide more information on places you might like to visit. So go out and enjoy Texas.

State Parks We've Visited

Abilene SP near Abilene
We were only planning to stay one night in Abilene so we decided to stay in a yurt rather than bring the tent out.  Yurts have double and single beds, bunkbed style, a sofa and a microwave.  More than we needed for just two people for one night.  There was a picnic table and grill outside also.  It was really nice and had everything you need, including a basic camping necessity - the armadillo.

Balmorhea SP in Balmorhea
Balmorhea has camping and RV sites as well as the San Solomon Courts.  There really isn't a ton of stuff to do there, watch the wildlife - which there is plenty of - and swim.  While we were there we saw a ground squirrel, a turkey, owls, lizards, a soft shell terrapin and tons of birds and fish.  It is really near to other parks so you can visit them and come back to relax in the pool.

Caprock Canyons SP near Quitaque
This is a very beautiful park.  It was raining when stayed so we couldn't ride the bike trails but we did hike some and got some great pics.

Colorado Bend SP

Davis Mountains SP in Fort Davis
The Davis Mountains SP has camping and RV sites.  Inside the park is the Indian Lodge, but it is technically not part of the park.  This park has great hiking trails that are pretty challenging. (At least for me they were.)  Everywhere you look there is a beautiful view.  Many of the older structures on site were built by the CCC and are still used.  The scenic drive is well worth the 73 miles.  I took way to many pictures to post here.

Indian Lodge
Indian Lodge is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.  The original 16 room building was built by the CCC between 1933-1938 and 1940-1942.  We stayed for two nights and wished we could have stayed more.  In fact I would have been happy to just move there.

Lake Arrowhead SP

Arrowhead SP has pretty but sparse landscape but the prarie dogs more than make up for it.  They are very entertaining.  It was a quiet, relaxing campground.

McKinney Falls SP

Palo Duro Canyon SP
Another wonderful park built by the CCC.  We stayed in a cabin two nights and camped one night.  The cabins are rustic and amazing to look at.  When we camped we woke to "wild" turkeys running from site to site looking for handouts.  It was very fun to watch.
